Neuro Surgery
Medicine heals doubts as well as diseases.
People are afraid to talk, but we care.
Welcome to the world of Neurosciences by Primus Super Specialty Hospital (PSHH) treating all the diseases and anomalies of Nervous System which includes Brain, Spinal Cord, spine, nerves, peripheral nerves and blood vessels supplying them.
Our organization is working with a clear core mission to provide excellent health care products and services in a compassionate and caring environment. We offer competitive Neurosurgical services which meet the requirements of health care providers in terms of both quality and cost-effectiveness. The Neurosciences has two broad divisions i.e. Neurosurgery which deals with surgical management and Neurology which deals with Medical diseases affecting Nervous System.
The department is well equipped for all the interventional surgeries of Brain and Spine with conservative management strategies.
Common Neurosurgical Conditions:
Brain Tumors
A brain tumor is an abnormal mass of tissue in which some cells grow and multiply uncontrollably, apparently unregulated by the mechanisms that control normal cells. The location of a brain tumor influences the type of symptoms that occur. This is because different functions are controlled by different parts of the brain.
The prognosis for brain tumor patients is as individual as the patients themselves. Your doctors will help you understand the possible repercussions of your specific tumor.
Spinal Cord Tumors
Symptoms of Spinal Cord Tumor are pain in the back (the site will depend upon location of tumor), weakness in upper and lower limbs, decreased sensation in body, difficulty in passing urine and stools. Most of the spinal cord tumors can be removed completely with good results.
Brain Hemorrhage
Uncontrolled blood pressure can cause the rupture of blood vessels in the brain causing brain hemorrhage particularly in the deeper areas of Brain. Patient will experience severe headache, may develop paralysis and speech loss and if the hemorrhage (clot) is large then patient will need surgery to remove the clot. Brain hemorrhage can also be due to the sudden rupture of aneurysm \ AVM in brain.
Aneurysms (AV Malformation)
AVM is an abnormal connection between veins and arteries which is usually congenital. Such AVM in brain can lead to brain hemorrhage and needs surgical intervention to secure these hemorrhage prone regions.
Stroke
Stroke \ Brain attack is a condition akin to heart attack which occurs due to the blockage of arteries supplying the brain leading to infarction (death) of that particular area of brain supplied by that artery. It can lead to sudden onset of paralysis on one side of body, speech difficulty, and difficulty in swallowing and if infarct is large then patient can become unconscious.
Spina Bifida
Spina Bifida means “cleft spine”. It is a developmental defect of Brain, Spinal cord and Meninges (protective covering over brain and spinal cord). It is of 3 types:
Myelomeningocele
Meningocele
Spina Bifida Occulta
Hydrocephalus
Hydrocephalus is the condition, in which there is an increase in pressure inside the brain due to abnormal accumulation of Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) in the ventricles or cavities of the brain. Surgical intervention is done to decrease this intracranial pressure when conservative management is compromised.
Trauma (Brain and Spine)
Head Injury is the emerging epidemic and is the 6th leading cause of death. Even a minor head injury should not be ignored as in some cases the symptoms may be delayed. The incidence of spinal cord injury is also on the rise due to fast vehicular traffic leading to severe impact in case of an accident.
Disc Injury and Prolapse
Due to bad posture, lack of exercise and over weight the problem of low back pain and neck pain is acquiring almost an epidemic proportion. If neglected, then this can lead to disc prolapse or injury in the lumbar and cervical region. Initially this is treated by physiotherapy and medication but about 20% of patients may eventually need surgery ie. Excision of disc.
Micro Invasive Neuro Surgeries
Endoscopic Neurosurgery involves the insertion of an endoscope, or a tiny video camera, through a small incision to treat a range of neurological conditions. The result is
- Faster and simpler procedure
- Reduced Post-operative complication
- Faster recovery
- Less pain and scarring
Nerve Disorders
- Peripheral Nerve Injury
- Brachial Plexus Injury
- Nerve entrapment like Carpel Tunnel Syndrome
- Nerve tumors
Common Neurological Disorder
- Chronic Headache
- Neurological pain like Trigeminal Neuralgia
- Epilepsy
- Movement Disorders like Parkinsonism
- Dementia (Memory Impairment)
- Neuropathies like Diabetic Neuropathy
Gamma Knife Radio-Surgery
Gamma Knife is a surgery without any cut or a single drop of blood. Two decades of research has revealed a non-invasive technique known as Gamma Knife to treat certain brain tumors. It is also known as Stereo tactic Radio surgery. In the mechanism of action, precisely focused Gamma radiation is projected over the tumor, which disrupts the cancer cells function and their replication without physically touching the brain tissue.
Deep Brain Stimulation
Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is a surgical procedure used to treat a variety of disabling neurological symptoms like tremors, rigidity, stiffness, slowed movements and walking gaits as in Parkinson’s disease.
In DBS a battery operated surgical implant called neurostimulator is used which is similar to a heart pacemaker which delivers electrical stimulation through electrodes to the targeted region of brain which control movement, blocking the abnormal nerve signals that cause tremors and Parkinson’s Disease Symptoms.
Pediatric Neurosurgery
This sub specialty of neurosurgery deals with diseases of child nervous system.
About the Team
We feel proud to inform you that this sensitive and cardinal department is led by a renowned Neuro Surgeon with an experience of more than 20 yrs in his field and who has made amazing changes to many patient’s lives with his strategic and serious approach, Dr Pushpender Kumar Sachdeva, M.S., Mch (Neurosurgery), Director Neurosciences, Chief Neurosurgery Division and Senior GAMMA KNIFE Neurosurgeon.
He has dedicated his life to this field and has also worked as visiting Consultant Internationally. Presently the Neurosurgery Department is being led under his supervision at PSSH Nigeria too. The department is also facilitated with advanced Physiotherapy and Neuro-Rehablitation unit.
